Tenneco Automotive Bringing Proven European Emissions Technology To North America

Supports growing demand for lower emissions, better mileage

DETROIT, MICHIGAN, MARCH 3, 2003 - Tenneco Automotive (NYSE: TEN) is introducing new emissions technologies to North America, which transfer technology from products already commercialized in Europe. The initiatives support growing demand in North America for thermal management components that help meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and improve fuel efficiency.

The company has begun demonstrating its Tubular Integrated (catalytic) Converter (TIC) to major vehicle manufacturers in North America and anticipates that it will introduce the TIC technology into North American production next year.

The company's Tubular Integrated Converter (TIC) offers potential cost savings due to lower manufacturing, tooling and material costs, and weight reduction up to 20 percent, compared with conventional converters. Selected models of Ford, Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat and General Motors vehicles are using TIC in Europe.

Tenneco also has introduced new exhaust-valve technology for cylinder-deactivated engines. The new technology, which leverages the company's European know-how and experience, offers greater temperature resistance and will help vehicle makers improve fuel economy. Tenneco expects that the new technology will appear on a customer vehicle within the next 12 months.

In addition, Tenneco Automotive was recently awarded the diesel aftertreatment business for a future DaimlerChrysler platform in North America.

"Each of these technologies and the products that embody them already are in use in European production vehicles, and we've received very favorable response to them from our North American customers," said Lois Boyd, vice president, Global Program Management for Tenneco Automotive, speaking at a press briefing at SAE 2003 here today.

"The broad issues of tighter regulations for emissions and fuel economy are the same in Europe and North America, but each market is distinct. Since consumer preferences are dissimilar, fuels vary and vehicle makers have different powertrain strategies, we see great opportunity to support our North American customers as they develop cleaner powertrain solutions suitable for this market," she said.
