Tenneco Wins 2006 Automotive News Pace Award, Company Recognized for Innovation and Technological Advancement

April 5, 2006

LAKE FOREST, ILLINOIS, April 5, 2006 - Tenneco Inc.(NYSE: TEN) today announced it has received a 2006 Automotive News PACE Award for its innovative Low-cost, Light-weight muffler developed at the company's Edenkoben, Germany, European Engineering Center. The prestigious PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to Excellence) Award recognizes automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance.

One of the world's leading suppliers of ride control and emission control components and systems, Tenneco also earned a PACE Award Honorable Mention for its Monroe® Quick-Strut™ - the industry's first fully assembled strut for the automotive aftermarket that allows fast and easy replacement.

"Winning a PACE Award for the second consecutive year is a distinct honor and reinforces our commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology in products that provide our customers with cost-effective improvements in environmental and safety performance," said Mark P. Frissora, chairman, CEO and president, Tenneco.

The award-winning muffler overcomes the expense and weight of conventional mufflers that use multiple layers of material to deaden noise. Tenneco's Low-cost, Light-weight muffler employs a thin-wall design of light-weight steel that is stamped with a computer-designed pattern of various shapes to sharply reduce noise. The product saves roughly 15 percent in material costs while its 20-percent weight saving offsets the addition of other emission control components like diesel particulate filters. The muffler's welding assembly process also simplifies production.

The advanced-design, cost-effective muffler was first used in 2004 in Europe by Peugeot-Citroen and has been chosen by General Motors for a new global vehicle platform.

Tenneco earned the Automotive News PACE Award, an industry symbol of innovation, following an extensive review by an independent panel of judges including a comprehensive written application and a site visit.

During the 12 years that the PACE Awards have been presented, Tenneco products have earned top recognition three times, with additional Honorable Mentions. Previous Tenneco PACE Award winners were in 2001 for the ASD shock absorber and in 2005 for the Kinetic RFS technology.

Tenneco is a $4.4 billion manufacturing company with headquarters in Lake Forest, Illinois and approximately 19,000 employees worldwide. Tenneco is one of the world's largest designers, manufacturers and marketers of emission control and ride control products and systems for the automotive original equipment market and the aftermarket. Tenneco markets its products principally under the Monroe®, Walker®, Gillet® and Clevite®Elastomer brand names.
