Tenneco Awarded Development Contract for GE Locomotive Applications Company Positioned to Become Long-Term Strategic Supplier to GE Transportation

Lake Forest, Ill, February 4, 2009 – Tenneco Inc. (NYSE:TEN) and GE Transportation, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), today announced they have signed a joint agreement to develop a proprietary selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment technology designed to reduce and control diesel engine emissions for various transportation and other applications.

GE and Tenneco will collaborate on the development and production of GE’s Hydrocarbon-Selective Catalytic Reduction catalyst technology (HC-SCR), a diesel aftertreatment innovation aimed at reducing harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions as effectively as urea-based SCR systems. Tenneco, an industry leader in emission control technology and global supplier to many leading global automakers and commercial vehicle manufacturers, will work with GE to further develop and integrate the HC-SCR technology into complete aftertreatment systems for both the locomotive and off-highway vehicle markets. Once fully developed, the technology will also be offered to customers in the on-road, marine and stationary power markets.

Tenneco will also have the opportunity to develop GE’s HC-SCR technology for expanded markets. Through an agreement with GE’s Technology Ventures team, Tenneco has acquired licensing rights for GE’s HC-SCR technology for on-road and off-highway vehicles, marine and stationary power applications and certain locomotive fields of use.

The two companies also announced that Tenneco has been awarded a development contract for locomotive projects and that Tenneco is positioned to become a long-term strategic supplier of diesel aftertreatment solutions to GE Transportation.

"We’re pleased to partner with GE Transportation on this exciting advanced-technology initiative and look forward to developing cutting-edge diesel aftertreatment systems for their locomotives and other applications," said Gregg Sherrill, Tenneco Chairman and CEO. "We’re also very excited about the opportunity this creates for Tenneco to diversify our SCR aftertreatment technology offerings and capabilities and expand our emission control business into new market segments."

"GE Transportation has been developing this game changing technology at its Global Research Center based on the request of our customers," said Steve Gray, Vice President of Engineering for GE Transportation. "Our partnership with Tenneco will position both companies to serve present and future customers worldwide."

GE’s HC-SCR technology has been under development since 2001 at GE Global Research, the centralized research and development organization for all of GE. Global Research was able to bring together a unique, multi-disciplinary team of catalyst, ceramics and combustion experts, as well as engine designers, to help create this revolutionary new aftertreatment catalyst. Once fully developed, the GE HC-SCR technology is expected to provide advantages in weight, packaging, and convenience, in addition to being offered as an alternative to a urea-based SCR technology.

Tenneco currently offers its own innovative ELIM-NOx™ urea-based SCR aftertreatment solutions for commercial on and off-road vehicle customers.

"This agreement truly strengthens Tenneco’s emissions control advanced technology portfolio," said Tim Jackson, Tenneco Chief Technology Officer. "Our customers will now be able to choose from a full suite of NOx reduction technology solutions with one stop shopping at Tenneco."

Additional details regarding the licensing agreement, long-term production supplier agreement and development contract are not being disclosed at this time.
